2013 was indeed a golden year for the WMGS. Not only did WMGS win all our five Provincial matches, but more significantly WMGS celebrated it’s 50th anniversary. The society celebrated this golden anniversary with a Special Charity Golf Day in support of the ACORNS TRUST.
This special charity golf day was held on Tuesday 9th July ’2013 at Kings Norton Golf Club, using a two tees start (Blue & Red loops) at 1145 hrs.
The format was a stableford competition in teams of four, including invited guests, (Masonic or non Masonic, wives and partners) with many team & individual prizes.
As usual, the competition for WMGS members for the Fellows & Weatheroak Bowls and the Veterans Cup were incorporated. All competitions were full handicap (max 24) stableford, with the best two scores to count for the TEAM prizes.
The competition was held on the hottest day of the year (in excess of 30 Deg C) with no cloud cover to give relief from the unrelenting sun. Inevitably, it was a gruelling day for all the 116 competitors and unfortunately for many, a five hour round, which somewhat took the shine off the day. The event was won by W.Bro. Derek Taylors (24) team comprising of Bro. Simon Hayes (18) both of Forge Mill Lodge No. 9658 and their guests Mr Mark Hayes (20) and Mr Ted Keen (18) with a team score of 91 pts.
The day would concluded with a lavish banquet of dinner / presentations, including light background entertainment with invitations extended to all surviving past captains, non-masonic friends, with the wives/partners. In all 162 guests dined.
Guests of honour at the banquet were our newly installed Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master Robert C Vaughan accompanied by his wife Steve, our newly appointed Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Stuart I Edwards accompanied by his wife Val, W,Bro. Bernard Preston, (in his 99th year) the oldest surviving captain (1983/84), St Oswalds Lodge No. 5094 and the representative of ACORNS Mrs Carole Crowe.
The prizes were presented by the society President and our new Provincial Grand Master the RW Bro. Robert C Vaughan, who was accompanied by Lady, Steve.
The society wish to thank all those Brethren who took part in any capacity, and all the donors and sponsors of the numerous prizes, which included match day packages for Aston Villa Football Club, West Bromwich Albion Football Club and vouchers for the Land Rover Experience at Solihull.
The monies raised during the 50th year celebrations amounted to £3,500, and a cheque to this amount was presented to the ACORNS Hospice at Worcester by our Chairman W.Bro. Keith Prescott on 28th November. W.Bro. Keith was accompanied by a delegation of the committee and their wives.
